Installation Instructions
Barrel should be positioned next to or in front of a downspout. Level ground area and sit the barrel at least 12” off the ground on cinder blocks, bricks, paving stones etc. to make it easier to get a bucket or watering can beneath the spigot. A thin hose works perfectly when barrel is at least 30% full. You’ll be surprised at the flow rate. (A full barrel creates over 400 pounds of pressure).
Place the barrel on your stand. Measure gutter for cutting. A sharp hacksaw will cut through any gutter in a matter of minutes. If your barrel is 12 to 14 inches above ground the lower cut will come at 36 to 40 inches from the ground (if the barrel is higher just to the math). The second cut will be 20 inches higher (see picture). Wedge something soft between the house and gutter (old rag, piece of rubber or plastic) to protect the siding and stabilize the downspout for cutting. Two downspout straps are included in the kit and should be used to stabilize the downspout if needed. Next install the flex pipes to the down spout and barrel discharge port. The upper flex piece should go around the upper downspout. The lower flex piece should go into the existing downspouts. These “inside” fits will eliminate all leaks. Caulk all gutter fittings with an outdoor rated sealant, but don’t go overboard because you will want to mate up the flex pieces at the end of the year to re-establish the downspout.
